Description
Much has evolved since the beginning of tango in the XIX century. What started as a marginal expression in the Rio de la Plata has expanded all over the world. Professionally trained dancers have taken the art form to a whole different level since the 1980s. There have been wars, economic crises and social changes, and yet, Argentine Tango has survived, adapted, and kept its essence.
We will facilitate a discussion about the current state of tango, the trends and innovations. We are interested in what is new in its music and the dance.
The speaker is Fernando Bietti (“Fer”). He is uniquely qualified to lead this discussion. He profoundly loves the art form, and has been at the vanguard of change. He is not afraid to explore new ideas and break new ground.
About the Speaker - Fer Bietti
Fer Bietti has been the heart and soul of the real, popular Buenos Aires tango scene since the revival of modern tango in the 2000s. As organizer & DJ of numerous weekly milongas including Zonatango, Chanta Cuatro, Bilongon, Milonga Federal CCK, La Cachivachería, and huge annual festivals such as Festival Electrotango Buenos Aires, Bietti has created many safe spaces for generations of tango audiences to experience the complete spectrum of Argentine Tango in the 21st century.
Bietti's specialty is creating and designing a space for explosive artistic synergy by bringing together world-class musicians, DJs, and dancers in the same evening. His stages are a kaleidoscope of tango expression, from musical giants such as singer Osvaldo Peredo & pianist Juan Pablo Gallardo to contemporary bands such as El Cachivache and Otros Aires. Dance exhibitions in his spaces showcase a variety of styles, as they reflect the music, from traditional demos to dancing on square-foot table tops, to Tango Trio, ContacTango, to solo improvisations on aerial silks. As DJ, he is keen to showcase living 21st century Buenos Aires tango musicians, from internationally-renowned composer-pianist Julian Peralta, to excellent young bands such as Cuarteto Extraordinario, to the massively popular inventor of the Bandolica, Mariano Godoy. He has also taught tango dance for decades, and has students worldwide.
Being the best kept secret of Buenos Aires’ tango scene, many of Bietti’s events are socially-inclusive and affordable for local Argentines by way of “pay what you can: all proceeds go to the artists”. By action, Bietti reaffirms the claim that tango is made by the people, for the people and will always stand by the people. Tango may be exported for economic reasons; but for Bietti, there is an urgency in tango that can only be preserved when the voices are genuine, expressed together as music and dance.
